Today may be the anniversary of a certain plumber’s first leap into 3D, but it’s worth noting that another mascot is celebrating an important anniversary too. That’s right, it has been 25 years since Sonic the Hedgehog originally launched for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive in North America and Europe.

Sega has already begun hyping people up for year of surprises – not only did we just get confirmation that Sonic Team is working on a new game in the franchise, but a few other partnerships have sprung up celebrating today and beyond.

First up is Amazon, which has a lot of Sonic games, apps and merchandise on sale. There is even a line-up of exclusive t-shirts, and a Sonic Dash event which could net you a $10 Amazon Gift Card.

Google has also released a massive Sonic infographic with a timeline, numerous facts, and a look at some analytics from Google searches and YouTube views.

Finally, those attending the Sonic 25th Anniversary event at San Diego Comic-Con next July will have even more to look forward to, as Archie, TOMY and New Era are bringing exclusive merchandise to the event. These include a baseball cap, a Sega Genesis themed USB stick, a variant version of the first issue of Sonic Mega Drive, a big head TOMY plush and finally a collectible silver coin. Unfortunately the tickets for the event have sold out, even after 100 more were made available.
