Dragon Fantasy: The Black Tome of Ice (Choice Provisions, $9.99) – Inspired heavily by classic JRPGs of the ’90s, this director’s cut of Dragon Fantasy Book II follows the journey of Ogden and the heroes of Westeria as they battle their way through the frozen wastelands of Tunaria. New features include dozens of bug fixes, improved storytelling, retuned battles and even a new boss fight! Unfortunately, there’s no cross-buy with the 3DS, so be sure to choose your version wisely.

Dual Core (Gray Fin Studios, $9.99) – Twin stick shooter fans take note! Combining retro arcade influences with a dash of RPG mechanics, Dual Core promises to deliver an endless barrage of lasers, robots, aliens and explosions. While the sci-fi setting feels a little uninspired for the genre, the gameplay looks to be fairly tight and energetic. Arcade mode might have the most potential, allowing four friends to cooperatively battle wave after endless wave of enemies until completely overrun by the relentless alien scourge.

Futuridium EP Deluxe (MixedBag Srl, $7.99) – Get ready for a psychedelic retro inspired shoot’em up with a modern twist that blends together frantic action, puzzle elements, a vibrant poly aesthetic, and an adrenaline boosting electronic soundtrack. Boasting 50 levels, five bosses, multiple unlockable game modes and 150 challenge medals, mastery of this impressive looking shooter is sure to push your focus and reflexes to their limits.

Rynn’s Adventure: Trouble in the Enchanted Forest (Arcane Four Studios, $9.99) – A debut title from a small indie development team in Canada, Rynn’s Adventure is a tough as nails 2D platformer where you guide the titular character through a variety of environments teeming with magic and danger. The art style is visually stunning with smooth hand drawn animations that really make the world pop. It’s sure to prove addicting and entertaining for anyone seeking a truly challenging and retro inspired platforming experience.

StarTropics (Nintendo, $4.99) – Mike Jones, a typical American teenager, takes a trip to the tropics to meet his famous archaeologist uncle only to discover he was abducted by aliens. Armed with nothing more than his trusty yo-yo in tow, it’s up to Mike and his foolish belief that a children’s toy could in any way function as a deadly weapon to save his uncle and prevent the complete annihilation of the human race! While gameplay can at times seem a tad derivative of The Legend of Zelda, there’s enough of a unique spin on the iconic formula to keep things fresh and interesting.

Zoda’s Revenge: StarTropics II (Nintendo, $4.99) – In this sequel to the vastly underrated original, intrepid adventurer Mike Jones, fresh from his trip to the South Pacific, is cast on a new journey through space and time in an effort to once again put an end to emperor Zoda’s reign of terror. After his prior attempt to bore the evil king to death using various parlor tricks proved devastatingly ineffective, Mike makes the wise decision to trade in his signature yo-yo for much more conventional (and lethal) weapons this time around. While still an enjoyable experience overall, the game never quite transcends the magic or charm of the original.
