While multiplayer Minecraft has thrived on PCs due to the relative ease in which you can mod the game, console players typically have to rely on the porters at 4J Studios to incorporate new features over time. Thankfully the game’s next big free update brings one of the most common multiplayer experiences: deathmatch battles.

Simply named “Battle”, the mini game pits players against each other in arenas dotted with loot chests. It’s up to players to grab what they can from these chests and unleash chaos upon their enemies: there’s no need to craft anything here. When you are slain you can hover the map as a bat and verbally torment your killer with a torrent of squeaks, in a morbidly cute twist on the typical death match formula.

4J Studios also designed the mini game with couch co-op in mind, which means a 4-player split screen set up is available. Those who prefer to keep things online will be treated to 8 player matches, which are sure to be even more chaotic.

Three arenas will be available from the start, but more map packs are going to be released later, and will cost $2.99 each. 4J Studios also plans to release more mini games down the line, but hasn’t elaborated on what they may be. We’ll be sure to bring you more updates as they come in.
