Super Meat Boy (Blitworks, $14) – Originally slated as a WiiWare port back in 2010, Super Meat Boy finally splatters his way onto Nintendo consoles! As you run and jump your way through 300+ levels of platforming bliss, it’s perhaps no coincidence that it shares initials with Super Mario Bros. Prepare yourself for tight, challenging, twitch reflex driven gameplay reminiscent of a bygone era that faithfully embraces its retro heritage.

8Bit Hero (RighteousWeasel, $4.99) – Independent developer Sean Garland makes his Wii U debut with this retro inspired title. Team up locally with four friends to explore over 30 challenging levels and discover all the secrets this 8bit world has to offer. Of particular note is the art style and how it seamlessly blends 3D environments with 2D 8-bit sprites to create something visually unique.

Color Symphony 2 (REMIMORY, $9.99) – A playful puzzle platformer that focuses on the ambiguity of color, this nifty PC port has the player shifting colors on screen in order to eliminate obstacles or create new paths. Anybody who’s played games like Runbow or Outland should feel right at home. With over 120 levels to tackle and online rankings and achievements, there’s plenty of features packaged in here to keep puzzle fans busy for hours.

Queen’s Garden (Joindots, $6.99) – If you need a break from Pokémon Shuffle and are looking for the latest fix in match-3 gaming then Joindots has you covered. Play over 100 challenging levels over three varied game modes to earn coins that help you grow and tend to your very own virtual garden. Sadly the gardening aspect of the game has very limited customization options, so don’t go into this one expecting a robust, RPG-esque experience.

Tachyon Project (Eclipse Games, $9.99) – If action packed twin-stick shooters are more your style, look no further than Tachyon Project. While not a genre typically known for its immersive storytelling, Tachyon Project’s slightly cheesy cyberpunk hacking plot has a bit of charm to it. More importantly the game plays great, sporting an array of different enemy types and customization options to keep you chasing better high scores well into the night.

Wii U Virtual Console

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (Nintendo, $9.99) – Nintendo’s secret plan to get every single Zelda game on the Wii U continues as Phantom Hourglass splashes on the Virtual Console. Often swept under the rug by fans as one of the less memorable games in the Zeldaverse, it’s important to remember how this sequel to Wind Waker pushed the Nintendo DS to its limits, both from a visual and feature standpoint. The game’s clever touch based puzzles, intuitive control scheme, and vibrant 3D world are more than enough reason for any fan, new or old, to return to the open sea once more.
