Yet again some Pokémon secrets may have been unveiled early via the filing of trademarks, with both “Solgaleo” and “Lunaala” being registered back in February. If these filings are connected to the franchise it’s probably a safe bet to say that they’re related to the upcoming 3DS games, given both Sol and Luna have Sun and Moon connotations.

What could these trademarks mean? At first glance it seems most likely that these are the names of the box-art legendaries, which will play a huge part in marketing in the run-up to release.

Of course a major wrinkle is that, unlike most Pokémon trademarks, these trademarks weren’t filed by Nintendo, The Pokémon Company, or Game Freak. Instead they are under the name of “Yusuke Inui”, who is supposedly an IP lawyer. It isn’t unusual for trademarks to be filed by proxy, and after the leak back in February the Pokémon Company could just be being cautious, but ultimately this does mean these trademarks may be unrelated.

If these trademarks are a sign of things to come, however, we could be seeing a formal announcement soon. We’ll be sure to keep you posted!
