Bayonetta has only been available for a day and we’ve already got evidence of a brand-new easter egg. Occasionally when she uses her forward throw move, the tetsuzanko, she will say a unique phrase: “Juu’nen hayain dayo!” Check it out in the video below:

The phrase is common in Japanese media, but this specific use is a reference to the classic Sega fighting game series Virtua Fighter. In those games, the fighter Akira uses the aforementioned tetsuzanko as a signature move, and he is well known for saying “juu’nen hayain dayo” as one of his win quotes. Coincidentally, one of the Mii fighter outfits you can buy in Super Smash Bros. is based on Akira’s original polygonal model.

As Bayonetta was originally a Sega published character, her moveset features references to other Sega games as well, one of the most prominent being the After Burner kick. It’s nice to see how much of this retro Sega adoration made the transition to Smash Bros., and we’ll be sure to let you know if any other clever references make an appearance!
