UPDATE: Thanks to the Japanese eShop, we have some screenshots of the game in action. Check them out:

In a surprise announcement this morning, The Pokémon Company has revealed the first trailer for Great Detective Pikachu: The Birth of a New Duo. Teased all the way back in 2013, Great Detective Pikachu: The Birth of a New Duo is Pikachu’s biggest departure from the classic Pokémon formula to date.

The trailer is largely live action but does contain several glimpses of what we can expect from a gameplay perspective. The story follows an up and coming Pokémon trainer called Tim Goodman and his adorable but ill tempered Pikachu as they team up to solve mysteries. Pikachu won’t be a silent protagonist in this series! He is fully voiced and apparently a coffee drinker as well!

Japanese fans wanting to play their very own Pikachu/Sherlock crossover don’t have long to wait. Great Detective Pikachu: The Birth of a New Duo launches in Japan on February 3rd on the Nintendo eShop for the low price of 1,200 yen (just over $10). Sadly, The Pokémon Company has not confirmed a release date outside of Japan at the moment but we will make sure to keep you in the loop as soon as they do!
