Nintendo has announced that early next week there will be an extended maintenance period for its online services. While the weekend won’t be touched, starting Monday, January 11th at 5:00 p.m. PST, the Nintendo Network will be down for at least ten hours. During this time “certain network services” such as online play and rankings will be unavailable, with full service resuming Tuesday, January 12th, at 3:00 a.m. PST. Please keep in mind that there’s always the potential for these times to be more of a frame than a definite period.

Nintendo-Maintenance

There’s no mention of eShop inactivity from Nintendo at this time, meaning any planned purchases may still be possible during that window. That said, if there’s anything you’ve been planning to purchase it might be best to grab it well before the maintenance for a smoother experience and to enjoy during the downtime.

What is most notable about this maintenance period is what it could mean for the near future. This is pure speculation at this time, but the last time a maintenance period was this long a Nintendo Direct was not far behind. Mind you, that maintenance was specifically for the eShop, and the Direct came about two weeks after. It would be a great time to flesh out the 2016 lineup of titles and amiibo, with a look through the Nintendo Direct archive showing plenty of broadcasts having occurred at a similar time in past years. For now, it’s a potential silver lining to the absence of Splatoon during the evening of the 11th, and know we’ll cover any updates or announcements for that going forward.
