Pokkén Tournament was inevitable on the Wii U, and it’s safe to say that the first question on everybody’s mind when it was announced was: “Pokémon amiibo?”

What fans didn’t expect, however, was an amiibo card compatible with the game. The amiibo cards took the amiibo fanbase by storm when they were released for Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer. But they seemed like something that would stay exclusively within that series. Apparently, that’s not the case.

Today’s Nintendo Direct revealed that as a first production run purchase bonus, an amiibo card will be included with copies of Pokkén Tournament, donning the infamous Shadow Mewtwo, a mysterious new form of Mewtwo revealed only a few weeks ago specifically for the game.

ShadowMewtwo-AmiiboCard

Regularly, Shadow Mewtwo can only be unlocked after certain conditions are met. However, scanning his amiibo card allows you to start using him in the game immediately.

Does this mean we’ll get other amiibo cards for the game, with the other playable Pokémon, or is it still safe to hope for actual figures? Either way, the card is beautiful and the artwork is fantastic. It’s definitely interesting to see Nintendo implementing the idea of amiibo cards into other franchises as well.

Pokkén Tournament launches this coming spring for the Wii U.
