Owners of the standard New 3DS fans in North America and Canada can rejoice; Nintendo’s North American online store is now selling cover plates! After waiting months for Nintendo to announce that the standard system would be available in the U.S., the world was pleasantly surprised to get wind of the release this last August. The New 3DS is only available in the just-released Animal Crossing bundle at this time, but it’s still possible we could see the handheld sold separately in the future.

After the news about the standard system broke, people who had been waiting for it started wondering whether or not the region would also see release of cover plates, the decorative front and back plates that adorn the system. Other regions, like Asia and Europe, have received a steady flow of fun and creative plates in their stores ever since the New 3DS launched. Lo and behold, just one day after the bundle’s release, Nintendo has already added a few of the plate options to its official online store.

Popular faces like K.K. Slider from Animal Crossing and Pikachu from Pokémon are among the first characters to be seen in this small wave of cover plates. With the wide selection we’ve seen pop up in other regions, it’s hard not to wonder what other designs we’ll be seeing in the future. Will that gorgeous Majora’s Mask plate set make its way to the U.S. anytime soon? Or what about the the highly detailed Fire Emblem plates?

Only time will tell! Until then, owners of the standard New 3DS can at least rely on sites like Amazon and Play-Asia for importing their favorite designs.
