On paper, Runbow sounds like the kind of out-there game idea you’d read about in an internet forum post. It’s an action-platformer-racing-fighting game with a color-changing gameplay gimmick that includes nine-person local multiplayer and a whole host of guest characters. It sounds crazy, but as the new launch trailer shows, Runbow is 100% real.

The basic gameplay of Runbow is really quite simple: you run, jump and attack. As this is going on, though, the background is constantly changing color, rendering platforms and obstacles of the same color invisible. And in this game, “if you can’t see it, it doesn’t exist!” Modes range from a straight-up race to simple fighting to King of the Hill and more, with both single and multiplayer support.

Perhaps the game’s biggest claim to fame is its roster of playable characters, including a bevy of stars from other indie gems like Shovel Knight, SteamWorld Dig, Azure Striker Gunvolt and Guacamelee. Think of it as something akin to a Super Smash Bros. for indie games.

If any of this sounds appealing to you, Runbow is available now on the Wii U eShop for $14.99.
