Break out the cake and confetti, because it’s time to celebrate! Nintendo’s illustrious GameCube console came out in North America on this day in 2001, where its sublime purple hues, colorful face buttons, and portable shape made it stand out from its bulkier competition.

In more seriousness, the GameCube is home to some of the finest games to ever grace a Nintendo console: Super Smash Bros. Melee, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, Paper Mario: the Thousand Year Door, Tales of Symphonia, Luigi’s Mansion, Pikmin, Super Mario Sunshine, Mario Kart: Double Dash, Resident Evil 4, F-Zero GX, Animal Crossing, Super Monkey Ball, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, Kirby Air Ride, Eternal Darkness, and many more have etched themselves into the annals of video game history as timeless classics, and they’re all worth a look at even today.

What was your favorite GameCube game or memory? Let us know in the comments.
