The Nintendo Switch Presentation had a lot of huge announcements, but it was one of the smaller games that stood out to me most – Super Bomberman R. Not only is it the first console Bomberman game in years, it also shows Konami is willing to use the oft-forgotten former-Hudson IP. Check out the very first trailer:
While that trailer outlines the basics, today’s Treehouse Stream showed off even more of the game. First up they went through the story mode, unfortunately skipping some of the voice acted Saturday Morning Cartoon-styled cutscenes in the process. Unlike some of the later adventure-focused Bomberman single player modes, the new Switch title has a more classic approach, where you make your way through several worlds made up of classic Bomberman mazes while defeating enemies. These sections will also be playable in co-op, where players share the same lives pool.
When players run out of lives during the story mode they are given the option to retry from their current stage by spending some gems, or giving up and restarting the world over. These gems are earned through gameplay and can be used to buy cosmetic items, so there’s reason to choose the latter option. Here’s hoping Konami doesn’t worm some micro-transactions into the equation, though.
We also got a look at some multiplayer, which seems like pure, classic Bomberman at its finest. Power-ups are present and correct, the camera angle is right, and if you get exploded you spawn on the sides of the map and are able to throw some bombs in a desperate attempt to get your life back by exploding someone else. We also got confirmation that this mode will be 8 players locally and online.
At the end of the stream we learned that the game will launch alongside the Switch and that it will be available physically. The last remaining question we have is a big one – how much will the game cost? It definitely looks fun, but it’s undeniable that there probably isn’t enough content to justify a $60 price tag. If the price is right, though, Super Bomberman R is definitely a game I’ll be picking up at launch.
