We know the Switch has been selling well worldwide since its early 2017 release, flying off shelves and making for some of Nintendo’s best numbers in years. According to Famitsu, when it comes to the console’s home country, a new milestone has been surpassed. Japanese sales of the Switch have totaled over five million units, now coming up on the Nintendo 64’s lifetime sales and, further ahead, Sony’s PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 4.
Also in the initial report, Famitsu gave their listing for the top five selling Switch games domestically. It’s easy to guess which games they’d be, but the ordering is a little different than the one seen in the US.
- 1. Splatoon 2 – 2,621,928
- 2. Super Mario Odyssey – 1,788,228
- 3. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 1,738,502
- 4. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – 1,065,780
- 5. Kirby Star Allies – 591,721
The difference between fifth and fourth place is quite big, but it’s still incredible to see Kirby hanging in there with the likes of Link and Mario. The number one spot though easily belongs to Splatoon, with nearly a million more units sold in Japan than the next highest title.
It’ll be interesting to see how these numbers change in time and with upcoming releases, like Pokémon: Let’s Go! and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but more than anything, congratulations to Nintendo for success in their own home.
