With how well Capcom has been doing with its recent Resident Evil games, it’s hard to imagine anyone at the company would be conceiving of a way to end the trailblazing survival horror series. There seemingly is a definitive ending, however, at least according to series executive producer Jun Takeuchi. In an interview with Yahoo Japan, Takeuchi outlined Capcom’s plans for the next few installments in the series and stated that he believes the “conclusion will come in the next 10 years.”

Going back to the original Resident Evil in 1996, Takeuchi explains, “The series’ story wasn’t planned out from the beginning; it expanded with each new game. When we were planning RE:2 and creating a 10-year branding concept, this was the most challenging aspect. If you play through all of them, I think you’ll realize the meaning behind the order of the remakes.” Mentioning how the release of Requiem earlier this year capped off the first 10 years of this plan, Takeuchi says, “I think the conclusion will come in the next 10 years.”

I’m not too surprised by that statement given that Requiem deals with the aftermath of the T-Virus 30 years later. It’s hard to imagine anything like that existing indefinitely, not to mention most of the original creators of the series aren’t even at Capcom anymore. All stories must eventually come to an end, even if fans don’t want to accept that fact. Until then, though, Capcom has plenty of titles lined up that will expand the lore of the series, including next year’s Resident Evil: Veronica, and likely remakes for 0, 1, and 5.

When asked about Veronica, Takeuchi said, “Initially, it was presented as a side story, but with the remake, viewers will likely realize the significance this event holds within the overall series. We’ve always slightly altered the original storylines in our RE remakes. These differences will gradually become more meaningful. I hope you can look forward to seeing the true nature of Spencer (the mastermind behind the series).”

Closing out the interview, Takeuchi stated that over the next 10 years, there won’t be just one Resident Evil game that closes things out. While he likely means remakes will fill in the gaps, one could interpret it as Resident Evil 10 not being the final chapter. Whatever comes next, Capcom has managed to keep its latest entries of shockingly high quality, so I don’t have any fears the finale will be good.
