It’s been quite a long time since Katana Zero released in 2019, but its developer, Askiisoft, has been working on DLC for the past half decade. Announced as free many years ago, lead designer/creator Justin Stander posted on social media today that not only is Katana Zero’s DLC still in the works, but it has become so big that it’s essentially the size of a sequel.
Hi, everyone! I'm still working hard on the Katana ZERO DLC.
We made it bigger. It's the size of a full sequel, plus a soundtrack of over 30+ new songs.
More updates to come. Thanks for your continued support! pic.twitter.com/AJzRnnCYTW

There isn’t much information to go on, but Stander confirms that the DLC will contain a soundtrack with “over 30+ new songs.” The reported size of being a full sequel makes me wonder why this isn’t being spun-off into a Katana Zero 2, but then Stander likely wants to live up to his promise of making this free for owners of the game. I have a tremendous amount of respect for a developer sticking to their guns like that.
Since Justin just made this post, I have to imagine the DLC isn’t too far out from release. He promises more updates to come, but then he did so back in 2021 when first writing about the DLC (which, at the time, was six times bigger than anticipated). Game development is hard, and I’d rather the experience be polished and ready to go rather than rushed out the door. In the meantime, you can buy Katana Zero on Nintendo Switch for $14.99 on the eShop.
Nintendo Wire’s Katana Zero review
Back when we reviewed Katana Zero in 2019, Matthew Weidner praised the action-platformer, saying it was it was “an addictive, bloody affair,” and that “[i]ts gritty neo-noir narrative, stylish ‘80s synth soundtrack, and tactfully twitchy gameplay play off each other perfectly, culminating into a flurry of fast and furious fun that’s not to be missed.” Needless to say, we really can’t recommend the game enough.
