A talented modder has turned a beloved 2D Nintendo fighter into a full-blown 3D brawler, allowing fighters to navigate Super Smash Bros. Melee’s maps in all directions.

“Super Smash Bros. Melee 3D,” developed by programmer Aidan Walz, turns the 2001 GameCube classic into an arena fighter, making it play similarly to games like Power Stone or Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero. Fighters can not only move and attack in any direction, but can also grab ledges on any side of the stage, and send opponents flying into the foreground or background.

Users can download the mod and access instructions on how to set it up on the GitHub page. The video below shows it in action, as well as a “How to Play” clip in the style of Melee’s official tutorial video.

The mod includes the following nine stages:

  • Dream Land
  • Final Destination
  • Fountain of Dreams
  • Green Greens
  • Mute City
  • Onett
  • Pokémon Stadium
  • Yoshi’s Island
  • Yoshi’s Story

Walz confirmed on the Super Smash Bros. Melee 3D Discord server that more stages are planned in future releases of the mod.
