In a somewhat puzzling move, the upcoming Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave will only feature one save file per account. While I would point to titles such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Animal Crossing: New Horizons as being similar, developer Intelligent Systems has offered an explanation for how it wound up with this decision. According to a recent “Ask the Developer” interview on Nintendo’s website, it comes down to the game’s multiple paths making it complicated on a system level.
Intelligent Systems director Toshiyuki Kusakihara says, “In Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, players can progress through multiple paths simultaneously as well as replay the same path multiple times. To ensure that none of the experiences players had accumulated would go to waste, we felt that consolidating everything into a single save file was the best approach for this game.” I’m not sure if I agree, but that’s not the only answer here.
Nintendo associate producer Kenta Nakanishi added, “Of course, I’m sure there are players who prefer to keep multiple save files, and I’m actually one of those players myself. But because the game system of Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is built around multiple paths, having separate save files would create system-related complications. It becomes difficult to keep track of how far players have progressed in each protagonist’s story when that progress is spread across multiple save files.”

That does sound complicated, but I think a system similar to what Detroit: Become Human used would have solved some of these issues. In that game, there was a linear path players would embark on which had multiple divergent points. If you wanted, you could reload older chapters to change an outcome, but the game wouldn’t count those as overwriting the main story. You would have to see a path through to its conclusion before you could alter anything.
I’m not a developer, so I can’t speak to how easy this would have been to implement. I still don’t understand why limiting things to one save file was necessary, especially since you can create another account on your system and have a separate save file. Whatever the case, Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave will not have the option when it releases later this week on September 17th, 2026.
