By now, most gamers likely know Nightdive Studios as the masters of remasters. For over a decade now, the company has been taking classic games and giving them incredible updates to run on modern hardware. At Nintendo Wire, we’ve even reviewed some of its work. Whenever team members make hints about games they’d like to see get re-released, it sends fans into a fervor about the possibilities. That’s what makes this latest company by studio head, Stephen Kick, so tantalizing.
On Twitter, Kick was asked by a fan if it was possible that Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem would ever get a re-release. Kick responded, “Eternal Darkness is one of my all-time favorites and it deserves the treatment I know @NightdiveStudio is capable of. Keep your eye on our Deep Dives…” I would hesitate to call that an outright confirmation of a new project, but it certainly highlights an interest from the team.
For my money, Eternal Darkness was a better Resident Evil than the classic Resident Evil games. I remember singing the praises of it years ago to friends in high school, though that was primarily because it was the first M-rated game Nintendo of America published. When I look back on it, the game still holds up for its fascinating usage of horror film techniques to trick the player into believing something is going wrong with their console. The game was so beloved by fans that Kojima even enlisted original developer Silicon Knights to handle porting Metal Gear Solid to the GameCube.
While I would love to Nightdive to give the game a remaster, I do wonder if the most realistic option for a re-release would be seeing Eternal Darkness added to NSO’s Expansion Pack tier. With the GameCube app getting sporadic updates, bringing Eternal Darkness into the fold would be an excellent way to compel people to grab a Nintendo Switch 2 and subscription.
