One of my most anticipated games for 2026, developer Level-5 confirmed during today’s Nintendo Direct that Professor Layton and the New World of Steam will be hitting PC and consoles on December 10th, 2026. Including the “biggest collection of puzzles” in the series’ history, today’s trailer was mostly an overview of things we already know. Layton teams up with a slightly older Luke to uncover a new mystery in the titular “World of Steam.”
For buyers of the Nintendo Switch 2 version, you’ll be able to use mouse controls to solve the various puzzles. That’s likely because of New World of Steam hitting PC, but I appreciate utilization of one of Switch 2’s best features. It also brings the game closer to its DS roots, which had players tapping the touch screen to push and prod at things.
One thing that remains to be seen is if this new Layton game was made using any kind of AI. Developer Level-5 has been very vocal about its embrace of Generative AI and what it intends to use it for, so only time will tell. I would prefer Layton not have any AI, especially since legendary puzzle makers Quizknock are involved.
