While Nintendo has been very coy about revealing which teams develop its most recent games, it seems the cat may have preemptively jumped out of the bag for the upcoming Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake. According to a listing on Elkjøp, a Norwegian electronics retailer, Xenoblade Chronicles developer Monolith Soft was listed as the developer for the new remake. The page has since been modified to exclude that information, but both Notebook Check and Nintendo Life captured it beforehand.
This rumor was spotted before the announcement of a Zelda-centric Nintendo Direct, which is set for September 8th, 2026. With the knowledge that we’ll be getting more information in the very near future, it really makes this rumor feel a lot more credible. Still, this is getting filed under a rumor for a pretty obvious reason: the listing was likely an error. There is some plausibility to this suggestion, however, because Monolith Soft has helped Nintendo develop other flagship games in the best. The developer even worked on past Zelda games, notable Breath of the Wild, Skyward Sword HD, and Tears of the Kingdom. Monolith Soft has experience creating massive open-worlds and those talents were leveraged for the bigger Switch Zelda titles.

What gives me pause is that the next Xenoblade title, Xenoblade Genesis, is currently in development with a tentative 2027 release window. Monolith Soft is likely preoccupied with finishing that, and even if it has multiple internal teams, it would want all hands on deck for the developer’s Nintendo Switch 2 debut. At the same time, Ocarina of Time’s remake has likely been in development for a few years now and is probably nearing the finish line. Anything is possible, really.
