In a report from South Korean site ZDNet Korea, it’s been claimed that Nintendo is currently considering producing an OLED variant of the Switch 2 for future release. While there are no specifics about release date or updated hardware specifications, ZDNet reporter Lee Ki-jong claims Samsung will be tapped to provide the new panel should the revision come to fruition.
“Nintendo is considering releasing a Switch 2 OLED with the resolution upgraded from HD (1280×720) of the Switch 1 OLED model to FHD (1920×1080),” Ki-jong writes. “If the release of the Switch 2 OLED model is decided, there is a possibility that product development will begin at the end of this year.” I suppose that makes sense, but with prices for the current Switch 2 set to increase soon, I fear that releasing an OLED model in 2027 would result in a price tag of $700 or more. Then again, Nintendo could hold off on the upgrade until 2028, riding out the current component shortage to potentially deliver this variant at a lower price.
Similar to the original Switch OLED, Nintendo is seemingly set to go with Samsung for panel manufacturing. “Samsung Display will strive to supply Switch 2 OLEDs to Nintendo,” Kijong states. “The extent of the price increase for the Switch 2 resulting from the application of OLED is a variable.” Considering OLED TV’s still carry hefty price tags, Nintendo would have its work cut out for it trying to market an OLED Switch 2.
While I’m not for increasing the price of the Nintendo Switch 2 any further, I can’t say that I wouldn’t jump on an OLED version of the console. I enjoy the form factor and ability to swap from portable to docked and back, but I tend to keep my Switch 2 on my TV since I have an OLED. It simply looks much better.
