Developer Sabotage Studios has announced that its 2023 hit retro RPG Sea of Stars will be receiving one final update soon. Dubbed the “Sunset” update, Sabotage is promising a brand-new cinematic intro for the game that details more of the backstory of the heroes players control. Its difficulty options have also been rebalanced, making Normal just a bit tougher while Hard continues to bit brutal.

While not truly game changing, there is one other surprise. Sea of Stars is now available for Nintendo Switch 2 with full save transfer from the Switch 1 version. In addition to increased resolution output, players can utilize GameShare to host three-player co-op sessions. The eShop page isn’t live yet, so we can’t confirm if it features GameShare through GameChat functionality, but that’s still a big plus. Better still is that owners of the original version will get a 100% discount, making the upgrade free.

Sabotage is also working with iam8bit to produce a “Collector’s Edition” package. Details are mum right now, but the studio promises to keep fans updated on the regular. Physical editions are currently available, though they don’t include all the post-release updates. Since everything is free, you can download them and get the same experience, but presumably the Collector’s Edition will contain everything on a disc/cartridge.

It’s really impressive how much support Sabotage Studios has given its game Sea of Stars. Released after gestating on Kickstarter for a bit, the prequel to The Messenger went on to win acclaim for its retro aesthetic and sensibilities, but Sabotage wasn’t finished. Over time, it added co-op support, new difficulty options, and even a free expansion. This Sunset update may be the final piece of new content, but it’s hardly a low note to go out on.
