In new interviews published by Nintendoduo and nTower, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi discussed the “emotional weight” of finally bringing the series to Nintendo platforms alongside other consoles. During the 16-bit era, Final Fantasy used to be a Nintendo staple, but due to the N64 sticking with cartridges, then Squaresoft jumped ship to the PlayStation 1 and seemingly left Nintendo behind until more recent times “To everyone in the Nintendo community, thank you for waiting so patiently for so long,” Hamaguchi said to nTower.
“I believe FINAL FANTASY VII is remembered by many as the title that symbolized the franchise’s departure from Nintendo hardware,” he continued. “That is precisely why, as creators, bringing REMAKE and REBIRTH to the Nintendo Switch 2 carries a very special emotional weight for us. This project is not only for longtime fans who have followed FFVII for years, but also serves as a gateway for those experiencing this world for the first time.”

Speaking to Nintenduo, Hamaguchi said, “Since we’ve been able to release Remake and Rebirth on Switch 2 at a good pace, interest has been high and pre-orders are going extremely well. Above all, I’m genuinely happy that we’ve been able to bring this series to Nintendo fans in the way it deserves.” That sounds like great news for the third installment, which still doesn’t have a release date. “We are not yet at the stage where we can share detailed information or a specific release date for the third title,” Hamaguchi told nTower. “However, as previously mentioned, development is progressing on schedule.”
