The Elden Ring movie has begun filming in London as of this week and outlet Shortlist managed to capture some photos from the newly erected set. Situated in Greenwich Naval College in South London, the area has been transformed into some kind of foggy medieval marketplace, which isn’t quite what Elden Ring contains. The markings on the door do resemble the Erdtree, though, which looks accurate enough.
Earlier in the day, the area was reportedly covered in dry ice and smoke to recreate the somber atmosphere that most of The Lands Between has. While there are practical sets being used for the film, green screens were also in place for background detail (probably to situate the Erdtree in the distance like can be seen from practically anywhere in-game). Shortlist includes some photos from a Reddit user that managed to capture the locations during setup. One highlights a barrel with “Stormveil” on it, which is a pivotal location from the game.
While it would be easy to fake some of these, Shortlist managed to take a picture of writer/director Alex Garland on the set. Known for films such as Ex Machina, Arrival, and Civil War, Garland seems to understand how to craft an engaging atmosphere for his films even if his writing can often fall flat. The jury is still out on if he can do justice to Elden Ring’s expansive lore.
I still don’t know how I feel about Elden Ring getting a film, but the world that FromSoftware crafted is certainly ripe for different adaptations. I would not expect a direct transposition of the game, rather we might see the downfall of Radahn and the corruption of The Lands Between as told in the game’s intro. It could certainly lend itself to an expansion of what the game presents.
