Blizzard is making sweeping changes to Overwatch in 2026, signaling a major shift in how the long-running hero shooter will evolve moving forward. During its recent Overwatch Spotlight presentation, the company outlined a new direction for the franchise that includes a rebrand, a renewed focus on story, 10 new heroes, and a dedicated Nintendo Switch 2 version.
Blizzard Drops the “Overwatch 2” Name
According to IGN, Blizzard will officially retire the Overwatch 2 name, rebranding the game simply as “Overwatch.” The change reflects Blizzard’s intention to position the title as an evolving, “living universe” rather than a numbered sequel.
Blizzard executives explained this decision during the Spotlight event and subsequent press, describing it as a move toward a more timeless identity for the game that isn’t confined to sequential numbering.
A Year-Long Story Takes Center Stage
Blizzard opened its Spotlight presentation with a cinematic centered on Season 20 hero Vendetta, marking the franchise’s first full Overwatch cinematic in several years. The video depicts Vendetta defeating Doomfist in front of key Talon figures including Reaper, Sombra, and Moira, signaling a major shift in the balance of power and ushering in a new era for both Overwatch and Talon.
2026 marks the advent of a story-integrated approach to Overwatch content, with a year-long narrative titled “Reign of Talon.” Unlike previous seasons that were largely gameplay or meta-focused, this initiative aims to weave lore, heroes, and events into a cohesive plot that plays out across six seasonal content drops during the year. Players can expect a mix of in-game events, animated shorts, comics, and map updates.
Blizzard also outlined plans for the newly rebranded Overwatch Season 1, which will serve as the starting point for the game’s new story-driven era. Beginning in 2026, Blizzard plans for every calendar year to reset with a new Season 1, allowing each year to function as a distinct narrative chapter with its own themes, heroes, and events.
10 New Heroes Coming in 2026

A centerpiece of the new era is a massive expansion of the hero roster, adding 10 new playable characters throughout 2026. Five of these heroes are set to launch alongside Season 1 (starting February 10th), with an additional hero coming every season for the rest of the year.
The initial group includes:
-
Domina (Tank): Aligned with Talon
-
Emre (Damage): Talon operative
-
Mizuki (Support): Talon support specialist
-
Anran (Damage): Overwatch ally
-
Jetpack Cat (Support): An airborne feline support hero with unique mobility and utilities
The remaining five will debut throughout 2026.
New Hero Sub-Roles
Alongside the new heroes, Blizzard is introducing a sub-role system that adds passive bonuses within each main role. Each Tank, Damage, and Support hero now belongs to a sub-category with a built-in gameplay perk.
Tank Sub-Roles
Bruisers take reduced critical damage and gain a burst of movement speed when at low health, encouraging aggressive, brawl-heavy playstyles.
Heroes: Mauga, Orisa, Roadhog, Zarya
Initiators receive light healing while airborne, rewarding dive-focused tanks that stay mobile and disrupt the backline.
Heroes: D.Va, Doomfist, Winston, Wrecking Ball
Stalwarts reduce knockbacks and slow effects, making them harder to displace and ideal for anchoring team fights.
Heroes: Domina, Hazard, Junker Queen, Ramattra, Reinhardt, Sigma
Damage Sub-Roles
Sharpshooters are rewarded for precision, with critical hits reducing the cooldowns of their movement abilities.
Heroes: Ashe, Cassidy, Hanzo, Sojourn, Widowmaker
Flankers gain increased healing from health packs, reinforcing hit-and-run tactics and off-angle pressure.
Heroes: Anran, Genji, Reaper, Tracer, Vendetta, Venture
Specialists briefly gain faster reload speeds after securing eliminations, keeping pressure high during team fights.
Heroes: Bastion, Emre, Junkrat, Mei, Soldier: 76, Symmetra, Torbjörn
Recon heroes can temporarily see enemies below half health through walls after damaging them, helping teams track and finish weakened targets.
Heroes: Echo, Freja, Pharah, Sombra
Support Sub-Roles
Tacticians can overcharge their Ultimate meter, allowing excess charge to carry over after an Ultimate is used.
Heroes: Ana, Baptiste, Jetpack Cat, Lúcio, Zenyatta
Medics heal themselves when healing allies with their weapons, improving survivability during sustained engagements.
Heroes: Kiriko, Lifeweaver, Mercy, Moira
Survivors trigger passive health regeneration after using movement abilities, rewarding smart positioning and timely escapes.
Heroes: Brigitte, Illari, Juno, Mizuki, Wuyang
Other New Systems and Gameplay Updates
Alongside heroes and lore, Blizzard is introducing gameplay and system changes:
-
Meta events (“Conquest”): Limited-time faction battles where players choose to support either Overwatch or Talon over multiple weeks, earning unique rewards based on performance.
- UI overhaul: A revamped UI/UX throughout menus, lobbies, and in-match systems designed to improve navigation and clarity. Stadium mode is also getting reworked icons for easier readability, plus a new “Hero Builder” that provides players with recommendations for hero builds based on worldwide player usage. Vendetta will also be joining as the newest Stadium hero.
-
Refreshed loot boxes that grant Shop cosmetics from the past six seasons.
-
New Mythicals: A new skin for Mercy and a weapon skin for Juno in Season 1, plus a new skin for Mei in Season 2.
-
Hello Kitty collaboration: Lucio, Juno, Mercy, Kiriko, Widowmaker, and D.Va will be getting Hello Kitty-inspired cosmetics on February 10th.
-
Competitive mode resets and new rewards, including new Crimson Wolf weapon skins, a Doomfist Diamond+ skin, challenger tier integration, FaceIt tournament invites, and rarity-based competitive titles coming in Season 2.
- The return of post-match voting cards and accolades, a highly-requested feature from Overwatch 1.
Dedicated Nintendo Switch 2 Version
IGN also reports that Overwatch will receive a dedicated Nintendo Switch 2 version this spring alongside Season 2, bringing much-needed visual and performance improvements to the game.
