Against all odds, the classic Sega series Ecco the Dolphin is set to return soon. Developer A&R Atelier launched a new website today that confirms it is currently in the process of working on multiple new projects for Ecco, including remasters of the first two Genesis titles, and a “third” game in the same vein. Those remasters were actually revealed last year, but it seems we’re closer than ever to seeing the return of everyone’s favorite bottle nose.
On the official website, the “About Us” section reads, “We’re currently working on new Ecco games and products that honor the spirit of the original while bringing fresh experiences to both longtime fans and new players discovering Ecco’s epic world for the first time.” It also confirms that A&R Atelier consists of not just newer developers, but members of the original Ecco the Dolphin development team.

In a press release, series creator Ed Annuziata said, “It has been years in the making and we’re honored to bring Ecco back. Ecco has always been more than a game about a dolphin—he’s a bridge between worlds.” You definitely get that in the second game, Tides of Time, which goes a little off the rails after the halfway point. Still, these games hold a mystique on Genesis players of old for not only their ethereal quality, but their incredible soundtracks. While two more sequels did arrive in the form of Ecco Jr. and Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future, the series has been on ice for 26 years now.
