In a now deleted post on social media today (archived by Wario64), publisher ININ has stated that Nintendo is now offering two smaller cartridge sizes for physical Switch 2 games. A few hours later, it retracted that statement and said it can only confirm that the upcoming R-Type Dimensions III will be released on a cartridge, which is presumably a smaller size than the default 64GB offered.

in the same update, ININ Games also confirms that Nintendo announced two new smaller cartridge sizes for Nintendo Switch 2 games

In the original post, the publisher wrote, “There is no better timing: Two days ago Nintendo announced two new smaller cartridge sizes for Nintendo Switch 2. This allows us to recalculate production in a way that wasn’t possible before.” In its followup, ININ said, “There has been no official announcement or confirmation from Nintendo concerning cartridge storage capacities. Any references to specific storage sizes should not be interpreted as official information from Nintendo.”

There are two possible scenarios I can see taking place here. One is that Nintendo okayed a smaller cartridge size for ININ, specifically, so that future releases from the publisher can be put on cartridges. Another is that Nintendo has actually deployed smaller cartridges and will be announcing them to publishing partners in the coming days. The first scenario would be less desirable, as it would cut other publishers out from having smaller cartridge sizes for games, necessitating Game-Key Cards.

Whatever is really going on, it’s hard to tell. At the very least, R-Type Dimensions III will be fully available on cartridge when it releases in May 2026.
