On Twitter yesterday afternoon, developer Panic Button revealed that it had been selected by Nintendo to update a number of Switch 1 games for the Switch 2. Included with the tweet is a graphic highlighting Super Mario Odyssey, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, and ARMS. The four games were updated on the launch of the Switch 2 to include new features such as higher resolution output, HDR color, and smoother performance.

The post reads, “Nintendo asked us to help demonstrate new capabilities of the Nintendo Switch 2 system, while remaining faithful to the original games.” The updates accomplished just that, as they don’t alter anything in terms of content, but do make each title appear like new. Bowser’s Fury is probably the biggest update of the bunch as it originally had a rather inconsistent framerate and low resolution on the original console.
If you’re unfamiliar with Panic Button’s previous work, it was responsible for a number of “impossible ports” to the original Switch. The company worked to port Doom, Doom: Eternal, Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus, Apex Legends, and Warframe to Nintendo’s previous hybrid device. While those ports are “compromised” in the sense of visual fidelity, they run remarkably well for the otherwise underpowered machine. Having personally experienced a few, I can say that playing Doom on Switch might feel bizarre against the PC version, but is otherwise playable and enjoyable.
It remains to be seen if Panic Button will continue helping Nintendo update various games for the Switch 2, but it would certainly be excellent if the company could tweak some other games.
