Much has been written about the explosive success Nintendo has seen with the Switch 2 since it released in June. While it was a pretty safe bet that first month sales would be high after such a long wait between consoles, analysts weren’t sure if Nintendo could maintain that pace for the rest of 2025. The sales forecast set by Nintendo, itself, was around 15 million, and while a good start makes that goal seem feasible, things could fall off. According to Circana’s Mat Piscatella, however, the Nintendo Switch 2 has actually outpaced the PlayStation 4 and Switch 1 in terms of sales for the same period.
In the last three months, Piscatella writes that the Switch 2 has moved an additional 2.4 million units since June. This beats what the PS4 did in the three months after its release, which was around 2.2 million consoles. The Switch 1 had a similar number and while the Switch 2 is falling in line with those devices, it is bumping ahead ever so slightly.
Breaking it down further, the Switch 2 has seen an increase in monthly spending on games to the tune of 32% compared to a year ago. This is notable since both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles have seen double-digit declines in overall spending. Nintendo’s latest console should also continue to see sales increase this year as not only are new games scheduled at a regular cadence, but the Christmas season is still in play for 2025. Even older consoles see a significant boost in sales during that period.
With regards to specific game sales for the month, Nintendo only had one game in the top 10. Donkey Kong Bananza has slipped to number seven after debuting in third last month. It was beaten out by newcomers Mafia: The Old Country, NBA 2K26, Madden NFL 26, and MGS Delta: Snake Eater. EA Sports College Football 26 also topped it, though it saw a decline of its own. While that sounds troubling when taken at face value, Nintendo historically does not include digital sales in these charts. DK Bananza has likely sold more units than the company has announced.
