Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 are officially here on the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 with a few quality-of-life updates in tow. While 4K at 60 fps on Switch 2 is a nice upgrade, the thing that got me most excited was the introduction of amiibo support for both games!
Nintendo has announced the jumbo-sized Mario and Rosalina amiibo (launching April 2026), but you don’t need to wait until then to try it out. Every amiibo figure works with the games today. You might want to curb your expectations though. These unlocks are, to put it bluntly, some of the most underwhelming we’ve seen yet.
What amiibo unlock in Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2
Each amiibo can be scanned in during gameplay to provide a small bonus. Here’s what you’ll get depending on which figure you tap in:
amiibo | Unlock |
---|---|
Mario amiibo | Life Up Mushroom (increases Mario’s life from 3 → 6) |
Rosalina amiibo | 1-Up Mushroom |
Other Super Mario series amiibo (besides Mario or Rosalina) | 1 coin (yep… just one measly coin) |
All other amiibo | 3 Star Bits |
Is It Worth It?
That’s the full extent of the support. No exclusive costumes, no hidden stages, no upgrades… just a few minor consumables and nothing more. As an avid amiibo collector, I’m glad Nintendo at least added something, but this release might take the crown for “most lackluster amiibo unlocks in history.”
