Reviews for Nintendo’s upcoming rereleases of Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 are out now, and they paint a mostly positive picture. While no one is particularly happy about the price, it’s undeniable that these games are still masterpieces some 15+ years later. One of the more common complaints is that the pointer controls are simply not as accurate as the Wii’s pointer controls, but that’s where many had hoped the inclusion of “mouse controls” for Switch 2 users would remedy things. Sadly, there’s a big caveat attached to that control option:
It applies only to player two in co-op mode.
Now, it’s not exactly clear if this is limited to Galaxy 2’s more “robust” co-op mode or if player two can use the mouse as a pointer in Galaxy 1. Even back on the Wii, there was a two-player option in the original Galaxy that amounted to a second player waving a Wii remote around to collect star bits. Galaxy 2 fleshed that out a bit more by letting player two control a Luma that could interrupt enemies, though it was hardly a fully fledged character. In this Switch remaster, player two on Switch 2 can utilize the Joy-Con 2’s mouse mode to help their friends, but player one cannot do the same.
This seems like a real missed opportunity, especially since every Switch 2 user has the ability to break out a mouse with the flick of their wrist. For Kunitsu-Gami’s Switch 2 port, Capcom allowed users to remap controls how they see fit and play the entire campaign with mouse controls if they wanted. Users could do more than just place units on maps, even though I wouldn’t recommend fighting in mouse mode.
There is every chance the feature could be patched in with a future update (the Mario 3D All-Stars collection eventually received GameCube Controller support), but for now, no mouse for solo players.
You don’t have to wait long for the release, as Super Mario Galaxy 1+2 releases this October 2nd.
