Last week marked a monumental occasion for Nintendo, as the beloved Super Mario franchise celebrated its 40th anniversary. Naturally, this occasion came with many Mario-related announcements in the Nintendo Direct aired a day prior. Among these reveals came the news of some of the most requested additions to the Nintendo Switch library, those being ports of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. While the games aren’t quite available yet, a surprising tidbit was shared on the Japanese Nintendo website, that being that they will support mouse controls on the Nintendo Switch 2.
The big question that comes to mind following that news is what exactly would mouse controls be used for in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2? The most likely answer is the cursor controls, which on the original release were controlled by aiming the Wii Remote. The cursor is a key part of the gameplay of both games, from collecting and shooting Star Bits, selecting which galaxy to travel to, and controlling Yoshi in Super Mario Galaxy 2. On the Super Mario 3D All-Stars release of Super Mario Galaxy, the cursor was controlled via gyro controls, which worked pretty good, but having another option is certainly nice.
How well this new control method will fit in along with the rest of the gameplay remains to be seen, but at the very least it sounds like a fun option for Co-Star Mode, especially thanks to GameShare. This feature is planned to be added in a free update after the launch of the games, the same one that will enable 4k resolution as an option for the Switch 2. If gyro controls aren’t your thing or if you just want to mess around in co-op with a friend, be sure to give mouse controls a try once the update becomes available!
