In an interview with VGC at Gamescom today, Final Fantasy XIV director Naoki Yoshida (aka Yoshi-P) stated that he has had “positive discussions” with Nintendo over the possibility of bringing the hit MMO to Switch 2. Currently, the game is available for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, but a port to Nintendo’s handheld would open up an entirely new audience for the game.
“For me, it’s just my aim to provide Final Fantasy 14 and 16 to as many players as possible,” Yoshi-P told the outlet, “and I hope that as many players as possible will be able to enjoy those two games.” Mentioning 16 is interesting, but it seems the current goal is for 14 to make the jump. While there is no news on whether or not Square Enix is actually working on a port, Yoshi-P continued, “we are putting in our best efforts, so I hope players will look forward to possibilities in the future. But I just ask for a little bit more time.”
The most tantalizing prospect? Introducing younger gamers to the MMO. “When it comes to players who haven’t played Final Fantasy XIV before, the younger generation of players, if they started playing Final Fantasy XIV on Nintendo Switch 2, of course being an MMO, it might be a new genre for them,” Yoshi-P explained, “and I would be super excited to get these new players into this genre and enjoying the game as well.”
With Final Fantasy 7 Remake still set to hit the system in the future, Square Enix clearly wants to support the Switch 2 as much as possible. Having 14 on there would be an excellent way to do that, especially since the console has mouse support built-in.
