Yesterday on voice actor Erica Schroeder’s Instagram page, it was revealed that prolific Meowth voice actor James Carter Cathcart had passed away from throat cancer at the age of 71. While he may not be an immediately recognizable name, fans of a certain age will be intimately familiar with his work as he had voiced iconic characters in the Pokémon anime’s English dub for over two decades.

You can read Schroeder’s heartfelt words in the embedded Instagram post below:

Cathcart actually began his run on Pokémon as Ash’s rival, Gary, in the original 1998 pilot. He would later go on to voice Professor Oak and Meowth, as well as various other characters across different shows and films. After being diagnosed with throat cancer in 2023, Cathcart would retire from voice acting, but would lend his talents to the Pokémon series finale that aired the same year.

This sad news follows on from last year’s loss of Rachael Lillis, an actor famous for voicing Misty in the original Pokémon anime’s English dub. She passed away from breast cancer at age 46 in August 2024.
