Nintendo has revealed that it will be discontinuing its rather convenient “Game Voucher” program for the Switch eShop on January 30th, 2026. While there is no stated reason for why this is happening, Switch owners who primarily purchase titles from the eShop will have until 11:59 p.m. PT on the above date to purchase any additional vouchers before they disappear forever. If purchased on the final day, you will still have one year to redeem them for games on Nintendo’s digital storefront.

The voucher system was first introduced to the Nintendo Switch eShop in 2019 as a means for players to save some money when buying digital games. Since most first-party titles during the Switch era retailed for $60, buying a set of two vouchers for $100 meant you could save $10 on new games digitally. The list of eligible games consists almost exclusively of first-party games, but saving a few dollars is worthwhile if you primarily buy digital titles.

If you were to ask me why this program is being sunset, it likely has to do with the increased cost of Switch 2 titles. Since most Switch 2 games are going for $70 (and Mario Kart World is $80), paying $100 for two games would mean getting a combined savings of $40. That would be a much better deal than the previous system and Nintendo likely doesn’t want to pass on that much savings to the customer. Strangely, though, Nintendo has stated it will continue to add eligible games to the list for the remainder of 2025, so I’m not sure why it’s being so gungho about ending the incentive.
