Since the unveiling of the Switch 2 last month, Nintendo has been hosting a series of videos it calls “Creator’s Voice” for new games coming to its platform. The latest in that line of videos features Square Enix’s Naoki Hamaguchi, series director for Final Fantasy VII Remake and its sequels. In the video, he recalls memories of his childhood playing different games, watching TV, and reading comics, and how a lot of that inspired him with the decisions made for VII Remake.
It’s all solid stuff, but until now, we haven’t seen much of the game running on Nintendo Switch 2 hardware. This video gives us a better glimpse of that, showcasing what looks like PlayStation 4-level visuals running with some crisp textures. Considering what the Switch 2 is, it’s very impressive that a handheld can output that kind of quality. Obviously, Nintendo’s upcoming platform won’t be on the same level as a PlayStation 5 or fully decked out PC, but I’m also kind of blown away that a handheld can look this good.
There is one bit where Hamaguchi mentions playing VII Remake in handheld wasn’t possible until now, and I have to wonder if he forgot about Valve’s Steam Deck. While I wouldn’t consider that device a competitor to Nintendo’s handheld, it will be interesting to compare that version of VII Remake to what the Switch 2 can produce. Whichever one comes out on top, it’s kind of wild that we live in a world where handheld experiences are on par with TV games.
