With no games being officially announced for the Nintendo Switch 2 yet and the official unveiling happening in a little under two months, we’re going to be getting blasted with rumors in the coming weeks. Like clockwork, another rumor has landed today that asserts Square Enix is prioritizing Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth for Nintendo’s upcoming console over a port of Final Fantasy XVI. The rumor comes courtesy of Nate the Hate, who correctly guessed when Nintendo would upload its Switch 2 teaser last month.

Posting on the ResetEra forums, Nate chimed in during a discussion about what Xbox Game Studios has planned for the future of the Xbox. Someone speculated that Final Fantasy XVI would be heading the console, which Nate “confirmed.” He stated:

“Barring any late changes, FF16 announcement/release for Xbox will be soon — no, not in the immediate future; but it should release by/around mid-first half of 2025 (around Spring, basically).”

This then shifted the conversation a little with someone assuming that XVI would not wind up on Switch 2. Nate then “confirmed” that, saying Square Enix is prioritizing 7 Remake and Rebirth for Nintendo’s upcoming platform. Seemingly, XVI is not planned at all for the console, though nothing is certain as of yet. While Nate has been reliable, he is working with incomplete information and nothing should be taken as sacrosanct.

What lends credence to these rumors is that we’ve already heard some rumblings that 7 Remake and Rebirth will be heading to Nintendo’s new console. In a speculative list on Nintendo Wire, we even rated the rumor a 4/5 for probability. That isn’t based on insider information, just a hunch and some knowledge of how the industry operates. It would be truly surprising if Square Enix doesn’t bring these two games to the Switch 2.
