In a bit of a surprise announcement this morning, the Angry Video Game Nerd has unveiled a brand-new game based on his iconic character. Titled “Angry Video Game Nerd 8-Bit,” there is a cool catch with this latest action/platformer: it’s playable on real NES hardware. After having two indie games based on his antics and reviews, the nerd is finally coming home to the console that put him on the map.

Developed by Mega Cat Studios and published by Retroware, Angry Video Game Nerd 8-Bit is an entirely new old-school platformer based on the limitations of the NES. While it has an art style similar to the previous AVGN games, this one was made to run on original Nintendo hardware and will even see a release on an NES cartridge from Limited Run Games. If you don’t have an old console lying around, the game will also be available on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox.

Apart from the novelty factor of a new NES game in 2025, this does seem like a pretty cool game. AVGN might be over 20 years old at this point, but his brand of gross-out humor and homages to cinema have remained fashionable. The previous two games were also decent throwbacks to platformers of yore, so there’s no reason to believe this latest will be a dud. It will be interesting to see if designing around now 40+-year-old hardware holds the game back, however.
