The past few weeks have been a whirlwind of leaks and speculation, with alleged images, specs, and rumors about the Nintendo Switch 2 dominating the gaming news cycle. Until Nintendo officially announces something about the much-anticipated console, this flurry of speculation is likely to continue. With that said, let’s continue down the leak rabbit hole with today’s scoop coming from the Nate the Hate podcast, where host NateDrake claims that both Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth are coming to the Nintendo Switch 2. (For context, NateDrake has been rated as a Tier 2 source on a community reliability poll on Reddit, meaning he is generally considered reliable by the community.)
This news isn’t entirely surprising. Square Enix has been vocal about its desire to share the Final Fantasy VII Remake series with a broader audience. Back in November, Rebirth’s Co-Director, Naoki Hamaguchi, expressed this sentiment, stating the following:
“In terms of Final Fantasy VII, there’s nothing really we can say at the moment, but certainly I do want to bring Final Fantasy VII and the Remake series to as many players out there as possible.”
It’s also worth noting that Rebirth didn’t quite meet Square Enix’s expectations in terms of profitability. Square Enix President Takashi Kiryu commented in the company’s financial results deck back in May. So it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Square-Enix likely wants to squeeze as much profit from this franchise as it can in 2025.
“In the HD Games sub-segment, we released multiple new titles, including major titles such as Final Fantasy XVI and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, but profits unfortunately did not meet our expectations.”
As a massive fan of the Final Fantasy VII series, I sincerely hope these reports prove true. More players experiencing these games is a win for everyone, and Nintendo fans are surely in for a treat.
