Pour one out for your millennial friends this week as id Software’s 1999 classic Quake III Arena has turned 25 years old. With all of us getting progressively older and the subgenre known as arena shooters being dead, it’s nice to look back on what once was and see how a title like Quake III has influenced multiple generations of gamers and creators.
While Quake III hasn’t shown up in any capacity on a Nintendo platform, both Quake 1 and 2 have. Not only were there rather solid N64 ports of the games for ’90s kids, but the recent Nightdive Studios remasters have both been ported to the Nintendo Switch. Each port contains the entire main game with all of its expansions, some brand-new levels, mouse and keyboard support, and crossplay with other platforms. Considering how good Microsoft has been to past Quake games, there’s reason to believe we will see a Quake III remaster in the future.
Until then, we’ll have to make do with the fact that the Quake series is on hiatus. Quake Champions might be a thing, but with it only being available on PC and never really finding the right audience, it seems as if Quake is simply on ice for the time being. Id Software is too busy with the next Doom and MachineGames is putting the finishing touches on an Indiana Jones adventure, but you never know. You can’t keep a good man down.
