When it comes to fiction, nothing strikes a chord with people quite like a long-standing narrative. This naturally extends to video game universes, such as the rather infamously complicated Legend of Zelda timeline. Despite how isolated each game in the series seems to feel, Nintendo does have an official canonical order in which the events all unfold. With this in mind, many have been speculating as to where the latest entry, Echoes of Wisdom, will fall once it gets added.
Thankfully, the wait is over, as the Japanese Nintendo website updated the timeline to include Echoes of Wisdom. For those uninitiated, the Zelda timeline branches after Ocarina of Time, depending on whether Ganondorf was defeated or not. Echoes of Wisdom falls on the branch in which Link was unsuccessful, which leads to games such as A Link to the Past, Link’s Awakening, and the Oracle games. Zelda’s latest adventure takes place between the events of Tri-Force Heroes and the original Legend of Zelda, with a decline in Hyrule listed directly after itself, likely indicating a larger time gap before the original Zelda.
While many could have speculated that Echoes of Wisdom would end up on this branch of the timeline based on world and enemy design, it’s nice to know precisely when it is. It could even be argued that this makes it a prequel to The Legend of Zelda, although that might be over-interpreting it all. Either way, it makes for a neat bit of trivia for the Zelda lore enthusiasts out there to mill over for a long time to come!
