Just a few weeks back, we learned from a VGC interview that Sega was planning on releasing a new Virtua Fighter game. While the hope was that it would be a proper Virtua Fighter 6, it turns out that the masters over at Sega AM2 don’t know how to go past 5. Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. has been announced for PC with a nebulous “Winter” and it will be yet another remaster of Virtua Fighter 5. This time, however, the game will be boasting 4K visuals and rollback netcode.

As the Steam store description reads, “The legendary fighting series makes its Steam debut with Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. Challenge the greatest fighters in the world in the ultimate remaster of the classic 3D fighter, now featuring Rollback netcode support, gorgeous 4K graphics, and all the bone-crunching, martial arts combat of the renowned original.”

Will Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. release on Switch 2?

I’m not entirely certain considering Sega could have scheduled this for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The PS4 port, Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown, has seemingly been successful, and while that opens the game up to a wider audience due to the PS4 install base, it wouldn’t be compatible with a new version of the game. This launch seems dedicated to esports.

On the one hand, I can understand this decision. Many in the FGC believe that Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown is the greatest fighting game ever made, so what else can you really do? A proper Virtua Fighter 6 would be neat, but it runs the risk of disappointing fans and making drastic changes that might upset the careful balance of 5. On the other hand, Virtua Fighter 5 first debuted in 2006 and is nearly 20 years old. It’s maybe time for the next chapter.
