After Sora – What’s next for Super Smash Bros. amiibo?

For those of you who have been part of the Amiibo News family on Twitter over the past nine years, you know just how much amiibo mean to me. I’ve been putting out amiibo in-stock alerts day and night for the better half of a decade, and the idea that the series that started it all, Super Smash Bros., is only one amiibo away from sailing off into the sunset gives me all the sad feelings you can imagine. But what if the series doesn’t end with Sora? What if Nintendo, in its infinite wisdom, decides to go further with it and releases even more figures down the line. Here’s everything I think could possibly happen as we approach the release of Sora.

 

The Game Over Timeline

 

 

One option is that the series will end with the Sora amiibo. In this timeline, Sora releases and Nintendo wipes its hands of the Smash Series until the next mainline Super Smash Bros. game launches — or, worse yet, it decides that amiibo are no longer a part of its Smash plans. All I can say is that it will be mighty difficult to top the character offering that we saw in Ultimate, so who knows if new amiibo would even be necessary at that point.

Probably the most likely thing to happen is the introduction of a brand-new Super Smash Bros. game with new amiibo in tow. Maybe this would be the perfect time for Nintendo to go back to the Player 2 playbook and reintroduce new amiibo fighters for every single returning fighter.

And speaking of Player 2….

 

The Player 2 Timeline

 

If you’ve been collecting since the Wii U era of amiibo, you know just how long of a wait we had for Cloud, Corrin, and Bayonetta to release. I remember at points wondering if Nintendo just decided to cancel them altogether! But, lo and behold, Nintendo rewarded our infinite patience with the release of not one, but TWO, amiibo for each character. The Player 2 line was something that appeared in the moment to be the new thing for the amiibo line. All I could think about was the amazing costumers we would see for amiibo like Mario and Link. Sadly, Nintendo decided to drop the Player 2 line entirely, leaving fans like me longing for what could have been.

 

 

That being said, could Nintendo go back to the Player 2 playbook in 2024 and re-release all of our favorite figures? It’s definitely possible — but, sadly, unlikely. But who knows, maybe we’ll see the announcement of a 1920’s style Sora before it launches sometime in 2024.
