Pop quiz: What was the first movie based on a video game in the entire world? It was “Super Mario Bros. – Peach-hime Kyūshutsu Dai Sakusen!” Or “The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach!” — an anime released in Japan in 1986. It attempts to adapt the story of the first Super Mario game in a suitably strange manner, featuring oddities like Luigi dressed primarily in blue and (spoilers) Peach running off with a prince at the end. It was actually considered lost media for some time, with a 16mm video being uploaded to YouTube only last year. But now thanks to hardworking fans, the film is available in remastered 4k with English subtitles!
Released by… uh, FemboyFilms (of all the words I never thought I’d type in an article…) the full hourlong video is available for all to see… for the moment. Knowing Nintendo, there’s a nonzero chance this historically and culturally important film will be taken down for copyright. Hopefully this slice of the company’s legacy remains up for us all to see, because the effort — both in the original animation and the restoration — is nothing short of impeccable. Kudos, femboys.
