It has been quite some time before we’ve heard anything of Monster Hunter Rise’s upcoming expansion, Sunbreak, so it’s certainly a welcome surprise to see an update from Director Yoshitake Suzuki today.
A tweet from the official Monster Hunter Twitter account confirms that the Rise team has been “putting the finishing touches on the monsters in the game.”
Hello everyone! We have been putting the finishing touches on the monsters in the game!

While the tweet itself is rather brief and vague, the accompanying image has led to speculation among fans of new monster variants or subspecies.
The latest illustration is very similar to one revealed back in December 2020, back when we were leading up to the launch of Monster Hunter Rise’s base release, though with one key difference.
This is #MHRise Director, Ichinose. Actually, today is my birthday.
Luckily my bosses weren't angry with me for last week's little hint. So this time I've got another teaser for a new m*nster! pic.twitter.com/yZ7IWuuff5

The previous drawing ended up being a tease for the reveal of series newcomer Bishaten. The new image has a red face rather than a brown one, which may indicate that there will be colored variants, subspecies, or even Apex versions of Bishaten – and possibly other monsters – within Sunbreak.
Monster variants and subspecies have been a recurring aspect throughout the Monster Hunter series, but Rise was strangely lacking in this department. With this in mind, it would make sense for Sunbreak to reintroduce the concept and bring new flavors to the beasts we’ve all been hunting over the past year.
Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak will launch on Nintendo Switch and PC in Summer 2022.
