You may or may not be familiar with Bearbrick, a series of plastic bear collectibles all sharing the same mold — kinda like Lego bears with a lot of different variations in skin decal. And as someone who loves Legos and bears, I can understand the appeal, and some of the designs are pretty charming — even if others, like a Bearbrick of NBA legend Magic Johnson, strike a fear of god into my heart. Such is the case with this… item. Creature? ….Being. A Bearbrick Pikachu figure, on sale now.
We all know innately the shape of Pikachu, its form, round and soft and stout and squishable. To see its features so brazenly emboldened on a thing of this shape, this form, not molded from the creativity of Promethean clay but the the sterility of cold plastic, winking playfully as if to say that it’s aware of the grotesqueness of its own existence and there’s nothing you can do about it — it reminds us that we are human, impermanent and ever-changing in a world where the sun will keep rising in the east and setting in the west, for long after we draw our final breaths and return to the earth that birthed us there will still be Bearbrick Pikachu, winking eternally. Not because it’s like monstrous or anything, it’s just made of plastic so it’s gonna take a long time to decompose.
Also, the Pikachu in question is explicitly female. I’m not sure what it means but it still makes me afraid. You can order one yourself right now at the Pokémon Center for $19.99.
