Looks like Team Rocket is blasting their way into Pokémon GO! During Yesterday’s Pokémon GO Fest festivities in Dortmund, Germany, something strange started occurring on phone screens and in real-life…
It all started with a new photobomb filter that was discovered by Fest goers. When snapping a picture of their favorite monster in-game, there was a chance that a male and female Team Rocket Grunt would appear. Like other photobombers in GO, encountering Team Rocket doesn’t seem to trigger anything special.

If the photobombing news is enough to get you excited, you might like this tidbit: A real-life Team Rocket hot air balloon was also spotted hovering over the Festival grounds! While it wasn’t confirmed to be carrying Jessie and James themselves, I’d like to imagine it was sporting the pair inside the basket.

But… what does it all mean? Well, it looks like dataminers may have already answered that question about a week ago. According to a post on The SilphRoad subreddit, Team Rocket battle quests were discovered in the latest Pokémon GO update data. The datamine states that you can gain special badges for defeating Team Rocket Grunts. At the moment, it’s unclear how these battles will play out, but you’ve got to admit that it would be exciting if Team Rocket attempted to steal your Pokémon randomly on the world map.
Here’s hoping for some official confirmation soon!
