Today’s the day! The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is in theaters now, and a new interview with Shigeru Miyamoto and Chris Meledandri (courtesy of Forbes) has revealed a bit more into the inclusion of a new character.

In case you missed it, last week Nintendo revealed through their socials that Fox McCloud from the Star Fox series would appear in the Mario sequel. This had been speculated as eagle-eyed fans noticed a silhouette that appeared to match Fox. Even with speculation, many wondered how Nintendo would justify including a character that’s not from the Mario universe.

According to Miyamoto, Illumination proposed the addition of Fox. Nintendo tried to avoid mixing IPs, however Miyamoto was interested in what they could do as Fox’s titles all have to do with space and the Galaxy Movie is conveniently located in the stars. While Miyamoto anticipated pushback, he instead found enthusiasm.

With Fox approved to appear, they then had to find a voice actor that would suit the role. Shortly after the Super Mario Bros. Movie released, they were approached by numerous actors who wanted to be included in the films in some form. One actor was Donald Glover, who expressed interest in any role and ultimately landed the role of Yoshi. For Fox, they received a direct request from Glen Powell.

“When we were working on the first movie, we began to get phone calls from actors. They started communicating their enthusiasm. After the first movie was done, there were two phone calls that came from actors expressing incredible conviction and passion about being involved with Nintendo, and one of them was from Glen Powell. He explained that we had to understand how deeply he loved the character of Fox McCloud. His dream was one day to be part of a Star Fox movie. I’m listening to this going, ‘he has no idea that Miyamoto-san and I are talking about Star Fox being in this new movie,’ and Glen is expressing this passion for this.

What happened was that after we spoke about it, we had decided we wanted Star Fox to appear in this new movie as a surprise. When I called Glen back, I said, ‘Look, I want you to have a conversation, but it has to be completely secret, you cannot talk it to anyone’, as no one knew this character would be so close to this movie. On top of that, we felt that there was a Glen Powell kind of attitude to the character, and he feels perfectly suited to that role. It was one of those gifts.”

I hope to see interviews with Glen Powell in the future over how he brought Fox to life, I enjoy having fans voice these roles! Brie Larson voices Rosalina and has famously been a huge fan of the Mario Galaxy games, so it’s exciting and refreshing to see someone who knows the character and has a connection with them.
