With a little over a week left until The Super Mario Galaxy Movies releases in US theaters, it’s only natural that film rating boards would start posting their ratings for the film. While we previously reported on a potential spoiler from a French theater chain, this time the newest “spoiler” comes from the BBFC, aka the British Board for Film Classification. Obviously, this story will cover said spoiler, but you can also use it as a warning while trying to avoid spoilers online.
I will say, the actual wording doesn’t really let onto anything, but fans have begun reading into things while applying their own fan theories to the mix. It follows from a long-standing theory that started with the release of Super Mario Galaxy all the way back in 2007. There is potential merit to the idea, especially since The Super Mario Bros. Movie established some of its own canon details, but I’d rather be surprised by the film than try to piece everything together ahead of time.
Anyway, this is your warning if you want to go into the film fresh next week.
So, on the BBFC website, there is a content description breakdown for different categories that explains what could be troubling for children. The film ranks pretty low in each category, understandably, though “Threat and Horror” mentions scary moments and characters being threatened by blades. Where things get spoilery is under “Theme,” which covers a potential big theme this film will cover.
The site reads, “Infrequent very mild upsetting scenes include flashbacks to the separation of a girl and her younger sister.” That is very clearly referencing Rosalina, who’s entire backstory from Super Mario Galaxy is that she was lost among the stars before finding the Luma’s. The prevailing theory for nearly two decades, however, has been that Peach is actually Rosalina’s sister. This rating may have inadvertently confirmed it.

I’m not sure how I feel about that as I’ve always viewed Rosalina’s story as more bittersweet than anything. While the start of her tale in Galaxy is tragic, Rosalina learns to find companionship in the Luma’s and helps them avoid the pain she felt for so long. While it’s entirely possible she is related to another Mario character, I think her story works better without that connection. Changing that for the film is certainly a creative liberty Illumination can take, but I don’t know if it will result in a better story.
Then again, it’s entirely possible that Rosalina has a different sister and people are just hoping to have their own version of canon confirmed. I guess we’ll find out next week.
